Abstract

This proposal is a sequence of four previous versions of the project and keeps its analytical and methodological objectives. The project main objective is to show the importance institutional variables for the working of democratic governments. The specific objectives of the project have been redefined and enlarged at each version. The main object and the methodological approach provide the continuity line of the different versions of the project. The so called transition literature was the main reference of the first version of this project. For obvious reasons, this literature lost its strength and appeal. In accordance with the main trends in the comparative literature, the project has changed its focus to the understanding of the working of democracy per se. Another fron has emerged, namely, the study of democratization. The project reasserts its attachment to the neo-institutionalism. Institutions are the main independent variables. On the methodological front we reaffirm our commitment with objective measurement of the variables. (AU)
