Influence of surface treatment with different lasers on aluminous ceramic adhesive lutting stability: comparative study between micro-tensile and micro-shear bond strength

Abstract

The aim of this study will be to evaluate the effect of six surface treatments on the bond strength between the surface of In-Ceram Alumina (Vita) and the Panavia Fluoro Cement (Kuraray) by micro-tensile bond strength test (mTBS) and micro-shear bond strength test (mSBS), as function of storage time (7 days or 6 months). Eighteen ceramic blocks will be obtained for the mTBS, and 36 blocks for the mSBS. The surfaces of the blocks will be polished until 1200 grit silicon carbide paper. The following ceramic surface treatments will be applied: a) sandblasting with Al2O3 + silane; b) sandblasting with Al2O3 + Rocatec Plus + silane; c) sandblasting with Al2O3 + Nd:YAG Laser (100mJ, 20Hz, 2W, 141.54J/cm2) + silane; d) sandblasting with Al2O3 + Nd:YAG Laser (140mJ, 20Hz, 2.8W, 198.16J/cm2) + silane; e) sandblasting with Al2O3 + CO2 Laser (60mJ, 20Hz, 1.2W, 11.94J/cm2) + silane; f) sandblasting with Al2O3 + CO2 Laser (100mJ, 20Hz, 2W, 19.90J/cm2) + silane. For mTBS the resin cement will be applied at the surface and light cured for 60s, followed by the application of composite resin Z-250 (3M/Espe). The blocs will be sectioned to obtain sticks of 12.0mm height and 1.0mm2 cross-sectional area. For the mSBS, micro bore tygon tubings (internal diameter = 0.7mm and height = 0.5mm) will be fixed on the ceramic surface and filled with the resin cement, followed by light cure for 60s. The specimens will be stored in water at 37°C for 7 days or 6 months. Both tests will be accomplished in a universal testing machine (EMIC DL 2000) at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. (AU)
