Abstract

The Asteraceae family is characterized by its ability to produce a large variety of secondary metabolites, which are often responsible for the therapeutic or toxic effects of the plants. Lychnophora salicifolia Mart. (Vernonieae, Asteraceae) is the most polymorphic species and has the greatest geographical distribution of the genus Lychnophora, occurring in "Serra do Espinhaço" (Bahia), Minas Gerais and in the southeast of Goiás. Temporal and geographic variations in the total content, as well as the relative proportions of secondary metabolites in plants occur at different levels (seasonal and circadian; intraplant, interplants and interspecies), and despite the existence of a genetic control, the gene expression and the genotype itself may change due to the interaction of biochemical, physiological, ecological and evolutionary processes. Thus, it is clear the importance of determining the quali and quantitative chemical variations and the establishment of chemotypes which may occur in the species L. salicifolia using modern, fast and efficient methods of analysis, such as HPLC-MS, HPLC-DAD-MS. The verification of inter and intrapopulational variation in the production of these metabolites could be very useful for chemotaxonomics studies especially for the establishment of qualitative and quantitative chemical markers and for the establishment of chemotypes.
