Abstract

Implants are very used to replace teeth lost to replace function and esthetics to patients. However, there is a rate of failure treatment, which may be due to early failure and lack of osseointegration or by late failure. This is mainly caused by peri-implantitis and occlusal overload, which can result in increased corrosion and/or wear and fatigue degradation. Thus, a major challenge is to find new biocompatible and bioinertes materials that are resistant to wear, corrosion, adhesion of microorganism and induces osseointegration, simultaneously.This study is inserted in a project that has as the objective to develop a new generation of Ti-based dental implants with multifunctional surface properties. Surface functionalization techniques, based on wet processes, will be used in order to build Ti oxide-based surfaces that can fulfil, simultaneously, the following requirements: induce an increased osseoconductivity, avoid microbial colonization, superior corrosion and tribocorrosion performance. Commercial pure Ti, Ti6Al4V and new TiNbZr alloys will be used in this work.Particularly, the main aim of this study is to assess the new multifunctional surfaces biocompatibility and those that show the best results will be evaluated in vivo.
