Abstract

The family Caponiidae, is a group of Haplogynae spiders composed by 15 genera and 83 species. The study of this family is considered insufficient. Some genera as Caponina, Cubanops and Orthonops, have been acceptably revised, others as Calponia, Diploglena, Iraponia, Laoponia, Nopsides, Notnops, Nyetnops, Taintnops and Tisentnops need other studies, while Caponia, Nops and Tarsonops still remain wait for a revision. This project pretends to contribute to the taxonomy, phylogeny and some aspects of the biogeography of the genus Nops. This genus is the most speciose in the family (28) and the most widely distributed. We pretend to revise types of all the species, as well as the main arachnological collections where the whole material collected in the Neotropical Region is deposited. We aim to carry out specimen collections across some territories of Central and South America as well as in some islands of the Lesser Antilles. Starting from a better taxonomic knowledge of the genus and deepening in the study of the morphological characters, we could then take the first steps to understand the phylogeny of the Nops species, as well as to determine the distribution patterns and the endemism areas. These results also represent the first real approach to the phylogeny and biogeography of one of the genus of this family of spiders. Besides the clarification of the taxonomy of the genus and the description and redescription of poorly known species; we will describe, for the first time, the female internal genitalia in all species of the genus Nops, and an illustrated taxonomic key, an arachnological reference collection and a digital database will be made.
