Abstract Diseases of the circulatory system are among the major causes of death in the population, and often the only treatment is heart transplantation. Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs) are used to provide circulatory support and hemodynamic stabilization in patients waiting for a heart transplant. The use of VADs is well consolidated in the United States and European countries in adult patients. In Brazil, due to the high costs of imported devices, clinical use of VADs is very limited especially for pediatric patients. A paracorporeal pulsatile device to be used as a bridge to heart transplantation in pediatric patients is being developed. A critical stage in developing mechanical support devices, especially VADs, comprises the evaluation of its performance in vitro, under simulated conditions of heart failure. In this project a mock circulatory system will be designed and developed considering the main parameters that characterize the systemic and pulmonary circulation of a pediatric patient. These parameters include vascular resistances and compliances (Windkessel model) in order to obtain flows and pressures data in both circulations under normal and heart failure conditions. The performance of the pediatric VAD InCor will be assessed using the mock circulatory system developed and the hemodynamic index of energy generated by this device will be compared to the energy generated by a continuous flow VAD.
