Abstract

The Jambu (Spilanthes acmella L. Murray ) ; syn. Acmella oleracea ( L. ) RK Jansen is a plant indigenous to South America and widely used in the culinary of northern Brazil. Several pharmacological properties are attributed to jambu, such as antioxidant, antimalarial, larvicide, anesthetic and anti-inflammatory. These properties are related to the presence of spilanthol, an alkylamide found in abundance in this species. In order to explore the bioactive potential of this molecule and the high cost of an analytical standard in the market ($ 60,000 / gram), it is intended in this paper, extract spilanthol from the aerial parts of jambu in extractor fixed bed using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) and/or scCO2/ethanol mixture as solvents, also make fractional extraction to obtain spilanthol enriched extracts. The extractions will be performed at temperatures of 40, 50 and 60 °C and pressures of 200 , 300 and 400 bar using scCO2 as a solvent in a first step and a scCO2/ethanol (95/5 w/w) mixture in a second step . Will be also evaluated the mass yields of extraction and its correlation with the characteristics of the isolated fractions in terms of content spilanthol in different operating conditions of temperature and pressure.Keywords: spilanthol, supercritical extraction, jambu, Spilanthes acmella.
