Abstract

The production of value-added plant extracts is an area that is increasing annually due to increasing evidence that certain phytochemicals can be used for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. However, the industry still uses outdated processes and inefficient techniques. This research project objective is to develop advanced processes for the production of value-added plant extracts based on the combination/coupling techniques and procedures for annatto, jabuticaba residue, and Brazilian ginseng because of their chemical compositions and functional properties. The process will be developed based on the use of ultrasound and/or microwave as a pretreatment. A combination of supercritical fluid extraction, pressurized liquid and ultrasound for the extraction of bioactive compounds from the raw material, the solid phase extraction for the on-line purification of the crude extract obtained and SAS (Supercritical Antisolvent process) or SFEE (Supercritical fluid extraction from emulsion process), also in line, to eliminate the organic solvent and formation of micro / nano particles encapsulated or not. The coupling of chromatographic techniques (SPE and HPLC ) to the existing ultrasound-assisted supercritical fluid/pressurized liquid extraction system and to a formation particle system, which will be assembled. The effects of different process conditions on production cost will be evaluated. The economic analysis of the developed processes will be carried out using the simulator SuperPro Designer®. The biofunctional vegetal extracts produced using the developed procedures can be used as an ingredient in the manufacture of a variety of food products, cosmetics, etc. This study aims to confirm the economic feasibility of combining / coupling processes in the production of value-added plant extracts for use in foods, drugs, among others, and training highly qualified human resources in this field.
