Abstract

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a disease of high incidence in human and canine species. However, some gaps remain not elucidated about the disease, eg, hormone physiology involved in the pathogenesis of BPH, or even a careful analysis of vascular hemodynamics involved, which can foster new tools for early diagnosis. Moreover, the therapy of choice for treatment of BPH in men and dogs, is not yet fully established before its possible side effect, causing some controversy on its use in clinical reproductive scale. Against this background , the objective of this research is to promote the characterization of changes resulting from benign prostatic hyperplasia in dogs subjected to different treatments, using resources such as Doppler ultrasonography in order to observe the hemodynamic changes involved in prostate and testicles, the technique immunohistochemistry to evaluate the expression of VEGF factor in the affected and treated prostate and histology to observe possible structural changes in the testes, and other techniques which aims to evaluate the pathophysiology of BPH, such as assessments on hormone levels, dosing the main hormones involved (testosterone, estrogen and dihydrotestosterone) and seminal level, assessing oxidative stress involved, antioxidant enzymes and parameters of semen quality. Thus, this paper hopes to contribute to greater elucidation as to the physiological aspects, clinical diagnosis and treatment of choice for benign prostatic hyperplasia in men and dogs. (AU)
