Abstract

Several plants acting in the gastrointestinal tract - rich in tannins and anthraquinones - still have many doubts about its mechanism of action and toxicity. Plants rich in anthraquinones are widely used as laxatives and prolonged use leads to colon melanosis, while the tannins do not have a full comprehensive mechanism of action, and its action is related with their chemical properties. This project aims to administration of Cascara Sagrada and Barbatimão extract - rich in anthraquinones and tannins, respectively - in animals and identify the presence of these substances and their metabolites in gastric, intestinal and liver tissue by Imaging Mass Spectrometry (IMS). Thus, the research aims to determine the distribution of these substances and their metabolites in tissues of the gastrointestinal system leading to a better understanding of the mechanism of action and toxicity of plants that acting in this system, helping to obtain safe and effective phytomedicines.
