Abstract

The identification of bacteria in food, water and biological samples is made through complicated or lengthy procedures, with confirmation of the bacteria presence normally arriving late. In this study we shall develop advanced analytical methods based on the electronic tongues (ET) paradigm for detecting bacterial threats. Use will be made of field-effect transistors and impedance spectroscopy with sensing units obtained from nanostructured membranes fabricated with self-assembled monolayers and molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs). The aim is reach an integrated approach combining advantages of ETs with sensor arrays, MIP sensors (high selectivity, chemical stability, low cost and ease of preparation), and field-effect transistors (possibility of integration in microchip and other electronic devices). The proposal also includes development of portables devices for real-time monitoring of bacteria threats through recognition of enzymes, antibodies, proteins, metabolites and toxins. (AU)
