Abstract

One of the problems in phytotherapic's use is the active substances dosage. Literature has reported seasonal, circadian and interpopulational variations for diverse secondary metabolites from different classes. Biological activity of a series of medicinal plants with anti inflammatory and analgesic effects has been related to the presence of chlorogenic acid and its derivatives. These substances, broadly discussed in oriental phytotherapy, are also important for bioprospecting programs and a series of other actions are described for them. Therefore, comprehension of seasonal and circadian variations that can occur during these substances' biosynthesis is directly connected to phytotherapics' quality parameters. Preliminary studies performed by our group suggest that plants which contain chlorogenic acid and its derivatives, when immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen, did not present significant concentration of the secondary metabolites. This data suggests a possible influence of catabolism of phenolic polymers instead of seasonal and circadian rhythm, however there is still a lack of experimental data that proves this information. Thus, the present study objectives to develop an analytical methodology to monitor seasonal and circadian variations of 8 species selected during a 12 months period. Aiming to contribute to this process comprehension, all of the experiments will be conducted with samples collected and submitted to traditional drying, comparing them to samples immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen.
