Study about the variants of the compilação de todas as obras de Gil Vicente's 1586 edition and the censor Frei Bartolomeu Ferreira's ethos

Abstract

Portuguese playwright Gil Vicente's (1465-1536) work was transmitted through chaptbook and two editions, one dating from 1562 and another from 1568, of the book entitled Compilação de todas as obras de Gil Vicente. Both editions were examined by censors of the portuguese Inquisition, eventhough only the former was notoriously amended, as the former, for having certain privileges, did not receive big changes, being considered to the present the base to the fixation of Vincente's work. Since we consider the 1586 edition of the Compilação as a historical document which carries marks of the portuguese Inquisition censorship process, this doctorate dissertation is to perform a study case of that procedure how it is related to the ethos of its censor, Frei Bartolomeu Ferreira. Two hypothesis were raised: the first, that it is possible to describe the censor's ethos through the amends in the 1586 edition; and another, that there are variants in the same edition that were not made by Bartolomeu Ferreira, but by the editor and/or the printer responsible for publishing and printing the work. Therefore, by using the theoretical and methodological grounds of the Textual Critic and Discourse Analysis, the following activities will be carried out: 1. investigate Gil Vicente and his work, the printed production and the Inquisition in Portugal in the XVI century; 2. selection and collation of the most amended plays in the 1586 edition in comparison to the 1562 one and the chaptbooks of 1517 (Auto da Barca do Inferno) and the 1523 (Farsa de Inês Pereira), published while the author was alive; 3. gathering of the substantive variants (lexical and syntactic) and 4. quantitative and qualitative analysis of such variants, taking into account the censorial motives, theirs interferences in the text's literary construction and how they reveal Frei Bartolomeu Ferreira's ethos. For the collation we use the fac-similed editions of the aforementioned Compilação editions available on the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal website, as well as, for support, the critical and fac-similed edition conducted by Camões (2002) and the one from the center of theater studies of the Universidade de Lisboa available at http://www.cet-e-quinhentos.com/.
