Abstract

The use of veterinary drugs in food producing animals has always generated controversy regarding the issue of food safety. As an alternative to conventional treatment, diverse publication come pointing the promising therapeutic use of natural products (plants) to the treatment of several diseases that affect animal farming, despite data that indicate possible toxic effects and food security of these products have not yet been fully clarified. In this context, previously investigations describe the promising potential use of plants from Brazilian flora, like Copaifera oleoresins, in treatment for example fish parasitized by helminths, nevertheless scientific literature about chemical composition oleoresins indicate that some of these constituents may pose risks to the health of the consumer. Thus, the present project proposal aims at contributing with the evaluate of the potential use of crude oleoresin in fish cultivates (Piaractus mesopotamicus) and verify residual persistence of the principal chemical components of oleoresin applied, with emphasis on the quantification of substances with toxic effects already described in the literature, such as ent-agathic acid; for this, will be developed, optimized and validated analytical method employing the LC-MS techniques. The development of this project seeks to contribute to the study of food safety of natural products used in fish farming, as well as to suggest an alternative model in vivo to verify the toxic effects of substances from natural sources.
