Abstract

It is estimated that approximately 125 million women in endemic Plasmodium countries get pregnant every year and, therefore, face an increased risk of acquiring malaria followed by its complications. Frequently is observed a recrudescence of the infection during pregnancy, suggesting a complex pathogenic mechanism linked to an imbalance of the immune response responsible for infection control. Despite the great advances made in the understanding of immunological aspects of the disease and its relation to pregnancy, the mechanisms involved in protection, especially those needed to maintain a balance between the beneficial and harmful immune response there still remain unclear. Recent evidence suggests the importance of dendritic cells in regulating the immune response during infection of pregnant women. Then, this project has the final objective of understanding the role of these cells in the resurgence of malaria in pregnancy. (AU)
