Abstract

The São Paulo State University (UNESP) is one of the largest and most important Brazilian universities, with outstanding performance in teaching, research, and extension of services to the community. Maintained by the state of São Paulo government, it is one of the three public universities with free education, along with USP (University of São Paulo) and Unicamp (State University of Campinas). Created in 1976 from the gathering of isolated institutes of higher education that existed in various regions of the state of São Paulo, Unesp has 34 units in 24 cities, 22 in the countryside, one in the capital, and one on the coast of São Paulo, more specifically in the city of São Vicente. Having this multi-campus characteristic, professors must act in the form of a network to share knowledge and, mainly, research infrastructure. Strategically located in the geographic center of the State of São Paulo, the Bauru campus brings together three UNESP faculties, which cover almost all scientific knowledge and have stood out as a reference in the area of biotechnology, seeking to become a state reference in technological development and innovation. Thus, from FAPESP's Call for Proposals for the implementation of the Science for Development Centers (CCD), we saw an excellent and unique opportunity for UNESP to lead and consolidate the cooperation work in the area of Assistive Technology (AT) involving several laboratories from UNESP and other HEIs in the state of São Paulo, intending to produce scientific knowledge, training personnel and technological development, innovation, and entrepreneurship. These laboratories and personnel involved in the proposal have already been developing joint and cooperative actions in a non-systematic way and, therefore, this is an excellent opportunity to organize and consolidate these actions in a Multidisciplinary Center for the Development of Assistive Technologies (CMDTA), a network of laboratories focused on the area of Assistive Technology. Recently, UNESP created the Coordination of Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Equity (CAADI), which has among its advisors an Accessibility and Inclusion Commission and local commissions on all campuses. Also, with the support of FINEP, the Bauru Technological Innovation Center (CITeBauru)/UNESP was implemented recently. CITeBauru is accredited to the São Paulo Network of Technological Innovation Centers (RPCITec) and was recently awarded by the SDE of the State of São Paulo in the São Paulo Innovation System (SPAI) to expand activities in the areas of aditive manufacturing, project design and products and advanced materials. The proposal in question adheres to the sustainable development goals established by the United Nations (UN) in its 2030 Agenda, specifically to goal number 3, which establishes the guarantee of access to quality health and promotes well-being for all, at all ages; number 4, which establishes the need to ensure access to inclusive, quality and equitable education, and to promote lifelong learning opportunities for all; number 9, which establishes the construction of resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization and fostering innovation; number 10, which establishes the reduction of inequalities within and between countries, and number 17, which establishes the strengthening of the global partnership for sustainable development.
