From seeds to final products: feasible manufacturing routes of annatto applying process intensification and process integration

Abstract

Perspectives and future trends about production processes are indicating new strategies for reducing expenses (energetic, time, reprocess, etc.) without affecting the products quality. Based on this scenario, the current project covers a research that focuses on applying the principles of process intensification and process integration to the whole use of annatto seeds as a source of bioactive compounds. We will study feasible routes for manufacturing annatto seeds through the use of supercritical technology and low-pressure technologies. The objective is to obtain fractionated extracts containing tocotrienols and geranylgeraniol, which could be applied in edible coatings and products with functional properties in the food, chemical and pharmaceutical fields. Coproducts from high-pressure processes will be used for obtaining other value-added products, as modified starch, oligosaccharides and the carotenoid bixin. This carotenoid is a coloring agent and presents antioxidant properties. Processes on encapsulation and particle formation will be applied to maintain the bioactive compounds stability. The more suitable manufacturing routes, based on experimental and simulated information, will be chosen. Thus, this project is intended to contribute with forthcoming useful information, both technic and economic data, aiming at overcoming the existing drawbacks for establishing small biorefineries of very promising raw materials and also enabling the creation of industrial opportunities.
