Abstract Streptococcus suis is an important pathogen in swine production systems in the world. Clinical signs of infection for this agent are variable and can be observed meningitis, arthritis, polyserositis, pneumonia, urinary tract infection and abortion. In recent years, with the growing of pigs intensive production systems, the occurrence of outbreaks of infection by S. suis increased. The high number of carriers of S. suis in animals at slaughter also increases the risk of infection to humans involved in the production chain, as well as to the people handling the meat "in natura". The infection in humans has been described in several countries as a cause of meningitis, pneumonia, endocarditis, sepsis and even death. This project aims the characterization of 215 isolates of S. suis that caused outbreaks in pig farms from different states of the country. This characterization will include the identification of the most prevalent serotypes, the determination of the resistance profile and the changes in this in the last 12 years, evaluation of the strains by PFGE and sequencing of the genome of a group of selected strains. From the sequencing of genomes will be determined the type sequences (STs) that are taking place in the country, genes conferring resistance to antibiotics and newly described virulence genes. These data will serve as a basis for future studies in the country involving the control of the disease in swine and even research involving the occurrence of this agent in humans or other animal species. | |
