Abstract

Impaired wound healing represents a biomedical burden, and the need for dressings with improved performance, flexibility and swelling properties stimulates continuous research. In this study, we propose to develop microemulsions that swell and form nanostructured liquid crystalline gels upon uptake of excess wound exudate, while providing sustained and local delivery of adenosine and propranolol to aid wound healing. We also propose to evaluate whether drug coencapsulation in alginate nanoaparticles prior to incorporation in the microemulsions further prolong release. Microemulsions will be developed with monolein, phosphatidylcholine, glycerol, tricaprilin and water. The relationship between composition and type of liquid crystalline phase formed, swelling kinetics and in vitro release will be studied. An optimized formulation will be selected for incorporation of alginate nanoparticles, which will be produced by ionotropic gelation using CaCl2. After characterization of size, zeta potential and drug entrapment, they will beincorporated in the microemulsions, and their influence on swelling kinetics and in vitro release will be studied.
