Abstract
The wetlands have a fundamental role in the control of factors that can affect or be affected by the climatic and environment changes. The project will be developed in Nhecolândia (South Mato Grosso State), a region characterized by a system of lakes, with water composition varying from fresh to hyper saline. It is concerned to a multi and interdisciplinary research whose scientific challenge is to elucidate the geochemical and biogeochemical functioning in that region, transfer the acquired knowledge to the elaboration of regional balance of greenhouse gas flow, and understand the processes of arsenic (As) availability to the waters, considering the influence of environmental factors, particularly, the climatic changes. The project is structured in four actions which specific objectives are: (i) identify the processes controlling the lakes biogeochemical functioning and evaluate the consequences for the C and N cycles, in the greenhouse gas emission and in the speciation of arsenic (As) in the landscape;(ii) verify the evolution of the soils around the lakes to understand the functioning of soil-water system; (iii) develop a numerical model for the hydrological and hydrogeochemical functioning of the lakes, in order to predict the system evolution, as regard to the environment stress; (iv) verify the potential utilization of remote sensing to identify spectral and topographic features, that allow to associate the variables that could be related with the greenhouse gas emissions and, from these data, to extrapolate for the regional scale. The achieved results could provide the scientific subsidies for the elaboration of public policies for the sustainable management of the Pantanal. (AU)
