Abstract

Carotenoids are natural fat-soluble pigments which have important properties for a variety of biological functions. They are related to the reduction or inhibition of oxidation reactions, through scavenging of reactive oxygen (ROS) and nitrogen (RNS) species overproduced by the organism. This project of "Intern Scholarship of Abroad Research" (BEPE) will be directed to the development and validation of methodologies by fluorescence, chemiluminescence or colorimetric method for determining the scavenging capacity of carotenoids against the main ROS and RNS of biological interest. These methodologies are scarce in the literature due to the fact that the major existing methods have been developed to evaluate the activity of hydrophilic compounds, or due to interference of carotenoids with the probes used for detection of reactive species, overestimating the fluorescence, chemiluminescence or colorimetric responses. The BEPE project will be executed in the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto (Portugal), under the supervision of Prof. PhD Eduarda das Graças Rodrigues Fernandes. This proposal, including the partnership already confirmed, is described in the post-doctorate project granted by FAPESP (Proc. 2011/15343) in December 2011, resulting in the consolidation of the scientific partnership between both institutions (UNICAMP and University of Porto).
