Abstract
The main goal of this proposal is to transfer for the Health System innovative medical applications oriented to computer-aided diagnosis, treatment, surgical planning, training and medical supportive decisions. The National Institute of Science and Technology in Medicine Assisted by Scientific Computing (INCT-MACC) has since 2008 successfully integrated a knowledge network for modern communication and multimedia transmission techniques. These resulted in the development and management of high performance cloud computing environments scientific computing applied to medicine, especially in the modeling and simulation of computational human physiological systems, promoting the development of medical image processing, scientific visualization and virtual reality innovative medical applications. The present goals are to deploy and test the above-mentioned medical applications in addition to modeling and incorporating of genomic, proteomic and metabolomics data to improve diagnosis prediction of diseases before they have time to manifest and to anticipate real c1inical therapeutic outcomes in a tertiary hospital. These goals shall be met by developing 16 specific aims as part of five general objectives: 1) consolidate the research and technological development and focus efforts in the integration of new data and development of algorithms at the frontier of science in the Medicine Assisted by Scientific Computing (MACC); 2) develop human resources at all academic levels and enable professionals in the rational and efficient use of this new knowledge; 3) transfer to society the new knowledge and inherent benefits; 4) transfer to the public and the private sectors scientific technological innovations, contributing with its immediate use to benefit population welfare; and 5) consolidate the INCT-MACC and its associated network as an international player among the few leading organizations in the computational modeling in medicine and its applications in health-care. The combined innovative and integrated strategies, as demonstrated by the outcomes from the INCT-MACC in the last period and the ones proposed here, may allow advances consistent with major global effort to reengineer the world Heath Systems to make them more efficient and universal within sustainable economic conditions for the developing and developed countries. Moreover, it is paramount to approach universal problems considering specificities of the local environment and genetic characteristics of our population, which has important local social-economic implications. The development of these objectives shall also enhance human capacity building on computational biomedicine applications and research and technology transfer to the public and private sectors. Finally, it is important to emphasize that this proposal for the 2015-21 period focus on the associated medical centers of the INCT-MACC network since they demand and will test the new applications and will integrate genomic data into new medical algorithms. Thus, to reflect these new priorities, there will be a change in coordination and headquarter will be transferred to InCor-HCFMUSP (the largest Latin American and a world Center for Cardiovascular Medicine). The past six years' experience of the INCT MACC provided great opportunity to identify things that did not work despite a successful evaluation of the outcomes. Thus, novel strategies detailed in methods were incorporated and a new group of 31 associate laboratories, headquartered in 11 states, and 17 foreign collaborator laboratories distributed in 7 countries were assembled to support the proposed goals and challenges.
