Abstract

Coffee is the most consumed beverage in Brazil and the Western world, which explains the great interest among researchers. Among the various substances in the chemical composition of coffee, in addition to the nutrients, stand out caffeine and polyphenols. Some studies have verified the physiological effects of these bioactive substances on human health, particularly in chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease. However, the results are conflicting and inconclusive. The objectives of this study are estimate the prevalence of coffee consumption and its contribution in polyphenol intake in our population and investigate the association of coffee with cardiovascular risk factors. This project will use data derived from two cross-sectional population based studies: Family Budget Survey (FBS) conducted in 2008 and 2009 and Health Survey-Sao Paulo (HS-Sao Paulo) conducted in 2008 and 2009. Will be used FBS data to estimate the prevalence of coffee consumption and polyphenols. To evaluate potential associations of coffee intake with cardiovascular risk factors, data from HS-Sao Paulo will be used. The study sample includes 26,390 adults and elderly people who participated in the National Survey of Feed in POF. It also covers 548 participants residing in Sao Paulo, from the investigation HS-Sao Paulo. The individual food consumption was estimated by the Food Record in FBS and three dietary surveys (two 24 hour Recalls and a Food Frequency Questionnaire) on the HS-Sao Paulo. The HS-Sao Paulo study, will be used indicator variables of cardiovascular risk factors (blood pressure and homocysteine), biomarkers, anthropometric measures, demographic, socioeconomic and lifestyle data and checked polymorphisms involved in the metabolism of caffeine and coffee consumption. The polymorphisms genotyping will be performed using the specific technique PCR-allele. Statistical analysis will be performed by multiple regression models in STATA ®, considered the significance level of 5 %. (AU)
