Abstract

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element that plays an antioxidant role mediated by selenoproteins, acting in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and Cancer, in addition to supporting the immune system. Due to its importance for biological functions, monitoring Se concentrations is relevant, especially for patients in vulnerable health conditions. In this sense, individuals with severe Obesity undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (DGYR) stand out and may have Se deficiency both before and after surgery, with additional risks to health and life quality. In this context, the present proposal aims to identify the factors (environmental, clinical, nutritional, genetic, and referring to selenium and its metabolites) determining selenium deficiency in the postoperative period of bariatric surgery. Thus, will be evaluated in pre and postoperative period of bariatric surgery: anthropometric parameters, food consumption, biochemical parameters, serum analysis of total selenium and metabolites, other minerals, genetic profile through the analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms and gene expression in genes related to selenium metabolism, in addition to identifying epigenetic. Finally, it will define a risk profile for Se deficiency that can assist in the classification and detection of susceptible individuals and, with that information, direct the most appropriate strategy to avoid damage to health. Statistical analysis, t/Mann-Whitney, ANOVA, Fisher/Chi-square, and Pearson/Spearman correlation tests will be applied. Specific software will analyze the raw data obtained from reading the arrays (genotyping and gene expression). A significance level of p <0.05 will be admitted. (AU)
