The world population has continually increasing which implies in a continuous need of increasing production of food, juices, biofuels for human survival and, as the Brazil is a country with continental dimension and has suitable climate for numerous agricultural practices, it can become the largest producer of these inputs. Nowadays, the agribusiness in Brazil represents 25% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and it is responsible for placing Brazil as a leader among emerging nations. The insects are, in general, considered agricultural pragues and the major man competitors for food being closely related to the mankind survival. They are also vectors of many diseases that affect humans, livestock and plants. Therefore, the efficient control of them and, in particular, of the ants is an important goal to be achieved. The development of alternatives methods for controlling ants with minimal consequences to the environment it is necessary, particularly, for ants of the sub-species of Atta and Acrorminex that can attack all types of cultures and silvicultures, leading to loss of approximately 17% of the agricultural area cultivated annually. The diversity of natural products and their peculiar characteristics such as stereochemistry and volatility, among other characteristics, become them potential compounds that may have specific roles in the communication and control of insects and the studies of their mechanism of actions can conduct to the identification of insect-specific insecticides. The main results expected from the present project are to obtain new methodologies for rapid identification and isolation of natural substances that can be used to control ants, the preparation of derivatives more active, the increase the comprehension of the ant nests dynamics and, from these information, to control the ants population and them, to transfer these knowledgement to the productive sector. The studies to be performed should also lead to the formation of highly specialized personnel. Thus, the main subjects of this project are controlling the activity of ants to reduce their action as agricultural pest and to train human resource. (AU)
