Resumo

A importância da Estatística nas ciências naturais é inquestionável. A Estatística é essencial para analisar dados de forma apropriada e também obter conclusões confiáveis. No entanto, pouco se é conhecido sobre métodos estatísticos formais em grafos e suas propriedades teóricas mesmo com o aumento no número de artigos relacionados com redes do mundo real (por ex., redes funcionais de cérebro, redes de interação proteína-proteína, redes de interação social). Redes são geralmente analisadas usando algoritmos computacionais baseados na teoria do grafos, como cálculo de medidas de centralidades (importância relativa dos vértices e/ou arestas) ou identificação de padrões estruturais (motivos). O principal problema com esta abordagem é o fato de redes do mundo real apresentarem flutuações intrínsecas (ruído aleatório) que os algoritmos tradicionais não levam em consideração. Portanto, métodos com perspectiva estatística podem auxiliar e complementar essas análises. A proposta deste projeto é de desenvolver desde a teoria e métodos estatístico-computacionais para grafos como também aplica-los em dados do mundo real, como as advindas da biologia molecular, neuroimagem e dados cardíacos. O desenvolvimento deste projeto será essencial para obter novos insights, solidificar a cooperação entre os pesquisadores e melhorar a qualidade na pesquisa dos grupos envolvidos. A longo prazo, pretendemos consolidar a área de Estatística de Redes, formar grupos de pesquisadores altamente qualificados, e finalmente, construir um Centro de Estatística de Redes no Brasil. Este centro atuará tanto no desenvolvimento teórico e de novas metodologias quanto nas aplicações em problemas das ciências da saúde. (AU)
