Abstract
INCT-DATREM aims research groups national network formation active on the development of innovative technologies for micropollutants evaluation in chemical, toxicological and radioactive standards, as well as the investigation of more efficient technologies for residue, wastewater, effluent and water catchment treatment contributing to risk assessment, environmental conservation, human health and quality and safe control of goods exportation and importation. The foundation of a research network centered in this Institute aims continuity of a well-established research group reinforced through thematic project (FAPESP-2008/10449-7), entitled `Dye occurrence, toxicity/genotoxicity and degradation processes evaluation in effluents and superficial water´, besides, expanding research actuation for new contaminants prospecting and knowledge, supporting scientific interchange and data concourse with other active research groups in Brazil, involving new researchers in emerging groups and/or related specialties funded. Research, development and innovation compose the targets to be developed in country strategic areas regarding cleaner and sustainable production and international standards suitability goods. In the coming decades, Brazil will be facing extremely restrictive rules for exportation and releasing chemical products into wat bodies without any toxic/genotoxic compounds and emerging pollutants risk assessment will be forbidden, requiring monitoring methodology and reliable mapping of toxicity/mutagenicity properties, distribution, bioavailability, persistence, and radioactivity for this purpose. Emerging pollutants and/or micropollutants refers to natural or synthetic chemicals, not granted as harmful to human health and environment due to shortage of results proving their effects, therefore, evidencing absence of legislation. Such compounds are presence in modern society daily products like pharmaceuticals, surfactants, plasticizer agents, pesticides, dyes, flame-retardants and others. Moreover, the occurrence of these emerging contaminants in different environmental compartments is alarming especially because of constant introduction into the environment, low degradation potential and association to toxic health effects. The referred Institute will attend basic and technological research needs and qualified human resources as well. These requirements derive from the challenge of contributing to risk re-evaluation release of at least 5000 compounds generated as residues or processes by-products as well as the necessity of new economic and efficient industrial effluent and wastewater treatment technologies contributing to policies and actions conciliating economic development, social-environmental issue and public health commitment. Within this context, the development of innovative analytical methods based on chromatographic techniques with different detectors (LN, DAD, ED and mass) are intended as well as versatile and economic sensors construction using diverse nanostructured materials in order to obtain simple diagnosis for determination of these compounds in complexes matrices. Methods and sensors development will be corroborated by mutagenic, genotoxic, ecotoxicologic and toxicologic properties investigation, providing suitable risk evaluation and water quality establishment for future implementation by Brazilian legal law. Overcoming analytical difficulties related to radionuclides increasing presence in hydric resources from technological process and proposing more effective and low cost alternatives for emerging contaminants removal or minimization of their effects are also intended. The proposal predicts working on knowledge boundary through multi and transdisciplinary research advancement focused on environmental conservation and human health. The Institute will promote strong interaction among other national and international Scientific and Technogical Institutions (STls), companies and government agencies and will act as excellence cooperative network in emerging contaminants research, contributing to development of technological innovations, human resources qualification joint programs, employment and finance generation and progress on population life quality.
